Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a risk assessment and a method statement?

A risk assessment identifies and evaluates hazards associated with a specific work activity, determining the likelihood and severity of potential harm and the control measures required to reduce risk to an acceptable level. A method statement (also called a safe system of work) describes the step-by-step process for carrying out an activity safely, incorporating the controls identified in the risk assessment. Together — commonly referred to as RAMS (Risk Assessments and Method Statements) — these documents are required before undertaking high-risk activities on offshore and construction sites, and are a fundamental part of contractor management and regulatory compliance.

How is contractor safety managed on offshore renewable projects?

Effective contractor management on offshore renewable projects involves multiple stages: pre-qualification and vetting of contractors prior to appointment, reviewing safety management documentation and workforce competency records, conducting supply chain safety audits during the works, monitoring contractor performance through agreed safety KPIs, managing corrective actions where deficiencies are identified, and maintaining comprehensive records for regulatory compliance purposes. For projects where the Construction Regulations apply, this process is integrated with the PSCS role to ensure all contractor activities are managed within the project safety and health plan.
